If you are considering starting a new website or redesigning a current website for your business, you may want to think about one of the most common complaints: updating or making changes to the website. Typically, websites are written in HTML/CSS coding which is essentially a different language and unless you have coding experience, it can be overwhelming to even look at. This means every time you need to make a change to your website, you will need to contact your webmaster and rely on them to make the changes for you. This can be tedious, may not happen as quickly as you would like and, if you have many changes and updates, can get expensive! What’s a good solution? WordPress! Not sure what that is, continue reading to find out:

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a free content management system used to create websites.

What does that mean?

The WordPress platforms gives a user (that’s you) the ability to login to a backend interface and manage the content on their website. Because of this, WordPress is a great solution for our clients that need access to their website files to be able to make updates and edits without ever touching (or seeing) any HTML code. The page and post editor is similar to Microsoft Office’s Word platform, allowing the user to utilize simple editing buttons to make changes to their content.

What are other benefits of WordPress?

1. WordPress is continuously updated, this means you will continue to receive improved features and securities to prevent hackers.

2. WordPress is built to be customizable and most WordPress themes now have a responsive design, making your site mobile and tablet friendly.

3. WordPress allows for easy implementation of SEO, getting the word out to search engines and bringing people to your site.

4. WordPress was originally created as a blogging platform and therefore comes fully integrated with a blog. This means you can easily add new content to your site (improving your SEO rankings). Learn about other benefits of blogging in this article by our team member Emily.

5. Integrate your social media platforms easily and in a variety of ways. From Facebook and Twitter feeds to LinkedIn badges, there are countless plugins to choose from. Read about how Exakt Marketing uses social media to build a brand.

6. With WordPress there is no limit on content so your website can grow as your business grows.

7. Set up multiple users to allow others to access your site. With defined and limiting access roles, you can assign who has access to what parts of your site and what they can do. This can come in handy if, for example, you have multiple team members who will be blogging, you can allow them access to the blog but not to the administrative settings of the site.

8. Extend the functionality of your site with plugins: millions of plugins exist covering a variety of topics and features and new ones are being created every day. With WordPress plugins, the possibilities are endless.

*BONUS TIP: For security purposes, make updates when they become available, but only AFTER making a full backup of your site. And change your password every few months, but be sure to use STRONG passwords.

Happy New Year! My last blog, Evolve or Become Extinct was inwardly focused, providing some insight as to why Visual Alliance Media, Moonstruck Marketing Group and Good Dog/Bad Dog Creative Design decided to merge to form Tampa marketing agency, Exakt Marketing.

In this, my first blog of 2013, I’d like to instead focus on one of our clients, AussieFIT, a newAussieFIT Website Screenshot chain of fitness clubs in Columbus, Ohio launched in 2012 by Geoffrey Dyer, founder of the Lifestyle Family Fitness chain of clubs that Dyer built from 1 club to 56. (Dyer later sold the chain, which continued to operate as Lifestyle Family Fitness, prior to its recent purchase by LA Fitness).

Soon after Dyer started AussieFIT by acquiring two former Lifestyle clubs in Columbus, OH, he engaged Exakt Marketing to provide various fitness club marketing services including the development and management of their online presence.

After a series of visioning sessions, the team set off to design the new website and social assets, paying particular attention to incorporate clear calls to action focused on lead generation and membership sales within the confines of the target visual brand. The custom website, built using a leading content management system, includes an integrated calendar, locations map, an online store / e-commerce platform, links to the club’s CRM system to print guest passes, an online sweepstakes, social asset integration and a blog.

Shortly after launch, the number of online generated leads increased by over 200%, providing a steady stream of potential new members for the club’s sales team to cultivate. More importantly, the conversion rate of those leads is an impressive 14%, an indication of lead quality, among other things.

Knowing what’s hot in website design can make or break your company’s website. It is important to know what trends are in style and how to successfully incorporate those trends into your design. Current trends that are successfully integrated into website design can boost the overall effectiveness and appeal of the site. Here at Exakt Marketing, we have some predictions for the upcoming year’s web design trends:

1. Responsive Design

With smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices making their way into everyone’s hands, business owners need to be aware of how their web presence is presented in mobile form. Responsive design will allow web developers to code and style websites to adjust to various screen sizes and resolutions. Using responsive techniques to control the display of websites on various sized devices will ultimately save business owners money – because web developers will not have to develop individual websites for each device’s needs.

2. Typography

A great amount of tools have surfaced that allow web designers and developers to implement a nearly unlimited amount of fonts in website design. This gives web designers more freedom than ever to design beautiful websites focused around typography, and using type to send a message. There are already a number of sites that successfully use typography to create and support a message, we predict this number will only continue to rise throughout 2013.

3. Colors

While a website’s colors will always vary and depend on the company’s branding, it is an integral part of website design. Pantone has announced their fashion color report for spring of 2013. Below is a screen shot from Pantone.com. If you notice, the first color on the far left is Emerald, the Pantone color of the year 2013. Here at Exakt Marketing, we plan on keeping an eye out for Emerald and the other spring 2013 pantone colors in upcoming web designs throughout the beginning of the year.

4. Textures

Already a common practice, we predict that in 2013 textures will play a large role in website design. Whether its mimicking a coffee stain on a napkin or the fibers of a corkboard, digital textures are becoming more real. There is a subconscious comfort in seeing texture on a digital surface. Many digital devices are embracing this trend including mobile devices and tablet interfaces. It’s usually the little details that really bring a website to life.

Conclusion: We are looking forward to seeing and setting new trends in 2013! Do you have any comments or ideas for website design trends in 2013?
